The history of West Town dates back to 1837 city limits. It was around that time when the first settlers built railroad lines, which would provide access to the Loop therefore attracting new residents.
In the beginning of the 20th century, the West Town experienced a dramatic influx of immigrants. Germans and Scandinavians lived in north and northwestern sections of West Town, while Polish immigrants settled specifically near Division and Ashland streets. Italians concentrated in southeastern parts, while Russian Jews settled primarily west, by Humboldt Park.
However, the largest influx of immigrant population to West Town came from Ukraine between 1880-1910. The area became known as the “Ukrainian Village” and up until today has a significant population of both original immigrants and a new wave of Ukrainian immigrants.
