The history of Logan Square dates back to 1836, when Martin Kimbell bought over 160 acres of land and initiated the building of farms. Although mistakenly misspelled, today’s Kimball Ave was named after Martin Kimbell. In 1889, the area was annexed by the City of Chicago and the neighborhood was named after the famed General John. A. Logan, who was an American soldier and a politician.
In the 20th century, Logan Square had its ebb and flow. While the area was booming in the 1920’s, the 1930’s brought about the Great Depression and would bring grim times to the community. Many residents abandoned the area and buildings were left to deteriorate. In the late 1950’s another wave of residents fled the community and left the remains in squalor. It was not until the 1960’s when Logan Square finally started experiencing the resurgence that is felt even today.
In 2020 Logan Square has become one of the prime neighborhoods in Chicago. It is home to an incredibly diverse population of Latinos, Eastern Europeans, and African-Americans.
