The first settlement in Lincoln Park dates back to 1823 when Archibald Clybourne (today Clybourne Ave is named after Archibald Clybourne) built a slaughterhouse on present day Elston Ave. Until 1863 Lincoln Park was a place of misery with lots of pollution and overcrowded grave sites at the “City Cemetery”. After voiced complaints from wealthy elites the cemetery was removed, and in 1865 the wasteland was turned into “Lincoln Park” named after the assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed large areas of Lincoln Park which was then rebuilt with great additions including the Lincoln Park Zoo (1874), Lake Shore Drive (1875), and the Lincoln Park Conservatory (1892). The 20th century marked a few memorable events in Lincoln Park. One of those events happened on February 14th, 1929, when seven men were taken to a garage in Lincoln Park, lined up against the wall, and shot by four assailants dressed up in police uniform. This event would be forever remembered as the St Valentine’s Day Massacre. No individual was convicted of the massacre, but evidently it was a gang-related incident between Al Capone’s South Side Italian Gang and Irish North Side during the prohibition period. Today Lincoln Park is considered one of the wealthiest and most expensive communities in the country. Average home prices are well over $1 million and many properties are worth over $10 million. Gang activity in Lincoln Park is practically non-existent and it is considered one of the safest communities in Chicago.
