About Albany Park

About Albany Park

Albany is located on the northwest side of Chicago, 9 miles away from Downtown. The area where Albany Park is located now was purchased by Richard Rusk in 1868. Rusk opened a horse-racing track which brought attention and popularity to the area from downtown Chicago. Slowly but surely the area grew and the city of Chicago eventually annexed it in 1889, making it a part of Jefferson Township. In 1893, four wealthy and well-known Chicagoans purchased more than 600 acres near the horse track and brought transportation lines to the area. The four investors decided to name the area Albany Park, in honour of Albany, NY, which was a hometown for one of the investors. Today Albany Park is known as a popular entry for immigrants, mostly Asian and Latin American, but also Eastern European and Middle Easterners. The neighborhood is often referred to as "Koreatown" in Chicago, with many shops and restaurants representing varying cultures and ethnicities around the world. Due to a large number of immigrants, it is estimated that up to 40 different languages are spoken in Albany Park Chicago Public Schools.
